Never Forget
.jpg)
Four years ago today on June 18, 2007, nine Charleston firefighters died while battling a raging fire at the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley. It is the worst firefighter tragedy since 9/11. This is a simple tribute to their heroic deeds which will never be forgotten. May we all remember the nine men who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. Rest In Peace brothers!

Creating Elevator Drop Key Holes
By: Lt. Sam Villani

In many older buildings with elevator service, drop key holes are found only on the lobby and top floor hoistway doors. This requires emergency services to ‘pole’ up, down, or across- all high risk operations- in order to remove occupants trapped by stalled elevator cars.
As Firefighters we often think outside the box to accomplish objectives in a more efficient and ever safer manner. On a recent run, Rockville, Maryland’s Tower 3 had an ‘out of the box’ moment while making an elevator rescue of several occupants in a stalled car serving an older building in their first due. The tower driver decided that instead of polling up three floors to get to the stalled car that he would make an imprint of the drop key hole’s location on the lobby door and using this template, create an impromptu hole on the hoistway door closest to the stalled car, and rescue the occupants. How we did it is outlined in this article.
